4.5 stars. Started slow for me, but it all made sense in the end. Beautiful, descriptive writing. Characters with lots of depth. Loved how the author circled back around to everything in the Epilogue. Just a lovely story of an artist coming into her own. Highly recommend!

This was good, but not as good as My Antonia or Death Comes for the Archbishop. Ultimately, as many other reviewers have said, the main character is just not very sympathetic or likable. Of course it is still Cather's masterful writing, but it just didn't grab me or move me.
