I was intimidated for the first 100 pages of this epic fiction. I know it has a reputation, and that I was supposed to love it. Yet, there were SO MANY little foreign details - from terminology to the way of life - that I worried there wouldn't be enough action to keep the story moving. I wasn't in the mood for a Wendell Berry character study. So, I put it down for a month.

Singrid Undset is a masterful writer. The way she draws you in to the emotions that Kristin is feeling is amazing. I feel the passion and then the guilt and weight of the sin. This is not a feel good book by any measure. But, it is a worthwhile read. I cannot read the rest of their series fast enough. I’m waiting for the consequences and hopefully the redemption of the Kristin and her husband.
