I loved the Namesake and expected to love this as well. Both are about young Indian Americans, mostly intellectual northeasterns, many with troubled identities and psyches.
The book is, however, a short story collection and I usually do not like short stories, mostly because my favorite aspect of fiction are the characters and specifically I love when I get carried away with the characters and invested in them. Every time I read one her books, I have one feeling throughout the course of the book: FREE. I don't know why, but I always walk away with that feeling and I love it. The only redundancy I'd like to see changed would be Ms. Lahiri's ongoing theme of children of Indian immigrants always marrying a non-Indian. A beautifully written collection of short stories exploring cultural identity and the sense of obligation to family and relationships. While I savored Lahiri's gorgeous prose, I found it difficult to understand the motivations of her complex characters, so many of whom seemed incapable of decisive action or the fortitude to break from their complicated histories. Though I've enjoyed all of Lahiri's stories, this collection is my favorite because of the emotional depth. Despite the requisite dose of depression, inescapable in most "serious" literature, these stories have heart. As always, the prose is lovely in its manicured grace.
