What Members Thought
A lovely look at a world that black Americans don't know much about - one in which brown people are raised in a hierarchy with a language that stretches back generations they can trace easily in a physical world as beautiful as its social system is intricate. I've liked Helene Cooper's writing for the New York Times, and a mentor gave me a copy of the book years ago. Really interesting look at life in Liberia as part of an elite family that later fled to the US during political upheaval. Particularly liked reading about the author's evolving understanding of how her ancestors, former slaves who founded Liberia, had brought a US-style of colonialism with them, and how that was the basis for her family's wealth and high standing, as well as for their downfall.
