I was slow to warm up to this book but as I got into it I found it engrossing, funny, and very well done. Stockett writes about three women living in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960s each in their own voice: a middle-aged black maid who loves the white child in her cares, a hot-tempered black maid who gets in all kinds of difficult situations and an inspiring white writer who was brought up by a maid.

Trite. Condescending. I couldn't bear to finish it. Don't believe the hype. You could read this book or get knocked upside the head with a frying pan. Both would be equally as obvious and painful.

A beautifully written book! I couldn't get enough! However, the ending left me hanging; I wished Kathryn Stocket would write an extra chapter, tell us what happened to the characters, if some of them changed their ways or how the kids grew up. It just left me wanting more!
