I was slow to warm up to this book but as I got into it I found it engrossing, funny, and very well done. Stockett writes about three women living in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960s each in their own voice: a middle-aged black maid who loves the white child in her cares, a hot-tempered black maid who gets in all kinds of difficult situations and an inspiring white writer who was brought up by a maid.

Great. I wanted to get through the story but then I didn't want it to end because I wanted to know more. I'm not sure it has a true climax. It got a little tense for awhile, but no real "peak" or showdown.
