She has a nice style of writing, good flow and structure. She fits into that nice middle-ground in her style of writing that makes for good readability. Some authors these days seem to go way overboard with complex sentences to the point where you have to read the sentence more than once to try and figure out what the point of the phrase it. It's a real pain to read a sentence like this: She walked toward the window, i I always seem to enjoy Carly Phillips books because they are so easy to read. Some authors these days seem to go way overboard with complex sentences to the point where you have to read the sentence more than once to try and figure out what the point of the phrase it. It's a real pain to read a sentence like this: She walked toward the window, ignoring the fact that she was wearing no slippers and the floor was cold - and besides, who knew where she'd put the slippers - she didn't need them anyway, and despite the fact that she knew the fog outside would make it impossible to see anything, and peered out the glass pane. That's an over-simplified example, but anyway, by the time you get to a sentence like that your brain is a little scrambled trying to assimilate all the parts and figuring out what the main point was. Phillips avoids that pitfall and also doesn't go to simple in structure. It just makes her writing easy to read. I zipped right through this book.

That's not to say I absolutely loved it. I enjoyed it, but I've read better books. When it comes to these light-hearted, more fun books, I never seem to love them. I just like books that are a bit more emotional or suspenseful. But I did like the book for what it was. I think you have to have read the first book in the series to fully appreciate and understand all the dynamics, but I think it would make sense enough on it's own. It's got good characters, a decent romance, a tiny smidge of suspense, and some humor. A nice combo.

I guess perhaps it was the romance that I found lacking a little bit. Something about it didn't quite work for me, but I'm not exactly sure why. Maybe it was that whole instantaneous thing. The characters don't really fall in love over time in this book...it was more like a splat, and that's not my favorite things. Whenever authors go that way, they seem to neglect other aspects of the relationship. I also found Zoe's reason for putting off a serious relationship with Ryan kinda weird. Her issues seemed a bit too severe for the underlying reason. It made her a bit too neurotic and fickly.

Anyway, if you're fan of fun, flirty books, you'll probably enjoy this one.
