It is clear that this, much like Dickens, was written as a serial, and likely paid by the word. There were numerous twists and turns, larger than life characters, and repetitive themes that would have played well in a weekly newspaper.

I'll never bother reading the old translations again. The Robin Buss version moves along with style and vigour. For what is essentially a rattling good adventure story with lots of by-ways included in the plot; that's exactly what one needs. My favourite part is in the earlier sections set in the Château d'If.

The plot of The Count of Monte Cristo was as complex and as fascinating as a Rube Goldberg machine as each injustice was repaid with equally harsh retribution. Despite its length and large number of characters the plot threads never got tangled and no topic was left unresolved.
