For me it was definitely a book of two halves. At the outset, it felt like a story from Robbert Goddard (a good thing) - a story rooted in the past, where decisions made years and even decades ago has a impact on current events. However, once the narrative moved from Malaya to Australia, it felt like a different book altogether. This is similar to Shute's Trustee from the Toolroom in presenting an adventure that spans half the globe. What makes it better is having a heroic character like Joe Harman in it, along with an empowered heroine like Jean Paget, but mostly it's better because of Joe. Another plus is the bittersweet triangle with the story's narrator who meets Jean forty years too late.

I had no expectations upon starting this journey; I decided to just go along for the ride to see where it would take me... ( the UK to Malaya to Australia). After enduring unimaginable trials and tribulations, one strong, intelligent, independently minded woman (with the help of her solicitor) changes the world around her for the better.
