Melody is confined to a wheelchair and unable to speak. Draper writes about this intelligent fifth grader's struggle to find her voice. One of the things that this children's novel does well is show that even when solutions are found, challenges often continue to linger. I found the ending very satisfying and think that students in grades 4 - 6 will find this a thought-provoking read as well.

This was a really interesting book. I found it fascinating to read about a character so unlike myself and to see the troubles and victories that Melody faced. I did think that the beginning had a lot of character development and it took a bit for actual plot to begin. I was so disappointed along with Melody at the end but I guess that it a realistic ending. Still pulled at my heart strings though. I would love to recommend this book to some of my students so they can understand the viewpoint of

I really, really liked this book. Both my son and daughter read it and loved it as well. Even though it's a young-adult book, I think it's perfect for adults and kids in 4th grade and up. It gives great insight into the life of a severely disabled young girl and teaches so many great lessons about getting beyond first impressions.
