I feel like she had the whole trial planned out first, and then ahd to figure out a way to get the characters there, because it all seemed a bit contrived leading up to the trial. She spent the first few chapters establishing the characters as we should know them, and then both main characters did 180s - things that I just could not believe they would do - it was so out of character! While this book was not as powerful as some of Picoult's other novels, I was kind of glad. They are sometimes emotionally hard to read. This one just wasn't as engrossing or engaging. And the CD attached was pretty awful. ...more

This is one of my favorite books by Jodi Picoult. I found the characters to be so interesting and I always enjoy courtroom drama in a book. The topics of homosexuality and infertility and more were explored and really made you think. I do think that some of the stories were a little hard to believe, but it didnt' stop me from liking it. Hmm....I'm not really sure that I liked it. I am sure that others of her books have been better. It's an important topic and very much relevant, but I felt like something was missing. That being said, I don't discount her amazing ability as a storyteller.
