This book is totally blowing my mind. It's so interesting. So many issues being tackled: sick parents, job loss, infidelity, homelessness!

Wow. This book took a crazy turn. I was identifying with Amy until halfway through the second part, and then it kind of went the way of a classic thriller.
Still, amazing book! Can't recommend it highly enough!

Still, amazing book! Can't recommend it highly enough!

I totally identify with Amy in not wanting to be a demanding partner, wanting to be cool about things. I also totally identify with Nick in pushing emotions down and not wanting to react to things with extreme emotions.
I'm only partway through - Nick has just revealed he has a mistress, and I have some thoughts about that: of course it's easy with his mistress, she's not living with him, not married to him, doesn't need to share a life with him. That's the problem with comparing mistress to wife - the wife will always lose, but then you make the mistress your wife, and then she gets boring and demanding too. The excitement of the mistress is the appeal, not necessarily who she is as a person. Also, I feel like she's being really, really stupid, not seeming to understand that it's bad for them to be seen together. She's supposed to be a journalism student, I would think she has some savvy.
And when he says that he knew he didn't love Amy any more, that was interesting. He had enough savvy to know he had become a cliche, the older writer instructor sleeping with his young student, so I would think he'd have enough savvy to know that his feelings didn't have anything to do with love.
And his character had the self-awareness to realize that he was being a dick so that his wife would ask him for a divorce, which is the M.O. of so many immature men, so I'm glad he was admitting it to himself and to the readers. And the reason, which is so they can be the 'good guy',not the one instigating the break-up, being the victim of the 'mean' wife, who is always 'on him', that is perfect. That is so accurate.
I'm not finished yet, I can't wait to find out what happens.
Finally finished, I think it's setting up for a sequel. ...more

Let me start by saying that I am surprised that I actually finished this book. I have never run across two more dispicable and unlikeable characters in my life. Nick and Amy deserve one another. In real life I would run, not walk,away from people this dysfunctional. The first half of the story moved rather slowly and I was ready to quit until a friend said it gets better. I agree. The plot twists and turns in the second half kept me reading, but by the end I wish both characters had died or gone ...more

Absolutely chilling, highly disturbing and unputdownable. I avoided spoilers, but guessed the big twist before the reveal. Even though I was expecting most of the crazy twists, it was still shocking and I'm not sure how I feel about the ending. ...more

Craziness. Flynn is excellent at moving the story forward and not giving away the next move. I need to think about how I feel about the ending-I know that is a serious dividing point for people.
