There were TOO MANY people in this tome for me to care too deeply about any of them! Was this really a Ken Follett novel? I mean, I've never had this problem with one of his novels before. Usually I'm so caught up in his characters that I'd forget to sleep. But not with this book. The constantly shifting perspectives kept me at arm's length. I can't believe I'm writing this, but I don't think I will continue with the Century Trilogy. ...more

I love sprawling sagas with inter-generational strife. This trilogy, kicking off with a WWI backdrop, was everything you'd expect from Follett. Massive social change and the initial cracks in the British ruling class, ill-fated affairs, and the struggles of the protagonists to overcome their low birth stations. Moving on to #2! ...more

Pretty much as perfect historical fiction as you can get. something for everyone. great narrator too
