While slightly distempered at the idea that the author completely ripped the characters, themes and plot of Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter, I am fascinated with a future society controlled primarily by religion and stigma. I like the character and her 'melachromed' issues. It deals with the idea of social outcasting, stereotyping and not knowing the shoes of a person until you have walked in them. Perhaps one of the best books of 2011, When She Woke is an adult-dystopian gem. Good for those who like Margaret Atwood or Diamant's Red Tent, Jordan has crafted a version of the Scarlett Letter in which the government and the church are fused together and "criminals" carry out their sentence as chromes (people with dyed skin.)
