Had to read it aloud to the kids in order to really read it thoroughly. The writing is beautiful but so detailed and descriptive. I am just not a detailed reader but was glad to be forced to read it carefully. Great story, characters. Enjoy the movies even more now.
Usually when people create worlds this intricate, their work is on display at the Visionary Museum and the subject of short documentaires. How Tolkien did this and managed to maintain a reputation as a sane person is the really triumph here.
The last time I read this all the way through, I think I was 13. I loved it then, even though I didn't catch much of the subtlety. Coming back to it with a more mature eye (and a more trained one!) made it even better.
