I'm not sure how to classify this. It starts out like Divergent in a society where everything is planned out. At age twelve there will be a Ceremony (yes, big thing capitalized on purpose) where the youngsters will get assignments for their life's work based on their abilities and interests. (In Divergent they were assigned to groupings; in The Giver it is actual work - who will be laborers, who will be doctors, etc.

How did I miss this book for so many years??? When my English teacher daughter told me it was really the First of the Dystopian Genre (which I'm really tired of now, but enjoyed when it was just Hunger Games and Divergent) I got it out of the library. And loved it. Easy read but significant. Looking forward to reading the sequels.
