I had this book on my "to read" list for awhile and was excited when I decided to finally read it. It sounded fascinating. But just a few pages in, I realized it was ludicrous. Granted, I've never been abducted, but doesn't everyone know that if someone has a gun to your back out in public and he's leading you to a van, it doesn't matter that he might kill you if you make a scene, because most likely he WILL kill you once he gets you in the van? She didn't even try - just "looked around" hoping I had this book on my "to read" list for awhile and was excited when I decided to finally read it. It sounded fascinating. But just a few pages in, I realized it was ludicrous. She didn't even try - just "looked around" hoping someone would notice that she was being led away. I would hope that I would fight and run and if he shot me, well at least I tried.

But anyway, I kept with it, because the reviews were so good. Then about 30 pages in, I decided I needed a break because the writing was just so terrible. So I started reading another book. But the good reviews were drawing me back so I went back to reading it and was just sitting there thinking, "What book did all these people READ?!" It just makes no sense, the writing is awful, it's just an absurd book. I decided to stick with it for 100 pages so at least I felt I gave it a try. But I just couldn't deal with it. So to re motivate myself, I came back here to read some of the reviews. They were good, so clearly the book would get better if I stuck with it. Instead, I read some of the reviews that rated it badly and the best part was they contained spoilers, so I was able to see exactly what was going to happen without having to endure the 360 pages I still had left in the book.

A book just cannot be good when the writing is so awful. And sadly Stevens' writing is just awful. And the thought of doing it in therapy sessions seemed like a good idea, but it just wasn't written well enough for it to be done right. And I must say I hated the character's (gosh, I was so uninterested in this book, I can't even remember her name) bad attitude when she came back. I know she was portrayed as tough and bitchy to show how this whole ordeal had messed her up, but again, terrible writing just made me laugh about it. I didn't see her as tough at all. I saw her as someone in complete denial who really didn't want help at all. I'm glad this one is going on my "Did not finish" list and glad that I only wasted one day on it before deciding to give up. ...more

I really enjoyed reading this book. I have to say I was very shocked in the end as to why and who had such terrible things done to someone they supposedly loved. At times it was very intense, can't imagine being locked up somewhere kept captive for as long as this girl was. If you are looking for a suspense thriller to read, then this is the book for you. ...more

First of all let me say that this book is an excellent choice for an audio version. The narrator is fabulous. Annie is a realtor who is abducted during an open house. Her life will never be the same as she endures a horrible year in captivity that she recounts through her sessions with her psychiatrist. This is a dark story but it kept me riveted while the police tried to do their investigation and figure out who was behind her kidnapping. There are some surprises that I did not see coming.
