When I read Alice Hoffman's books, I am immediately absorbed. It's always an effort to pull my attention away and whatever feeling is being evoked on the page, stays with me. This book's central character was a town in Massachusetts, with the different characters over 200 years, as descendants of the town founders, discovering love and loss. She also brings special animal characters and profound love into her stories. Were that either existed in real life.... ...more

Alice Hoffman is always hit or miss for me. This one managed to be both hit and miss. It reads like a short story collection, taking you through the history of a small Massachusetts town from its' founding up through present day. Each chapter is a different person's story in a different time. Some of them are beautiful and heartbreaking, but others are silly and forgettable. Still worth a read, but feel free to skip chapters! ...more
