[close] The Borrower is the story of Lucy, the liberal 26-year-old head of the children's section in the library of a small southern town, and Ian, a 10-year-old patron who loves books. Most people, from Lucy's boss to her neighbor to Ian's parents, think Ian is gay. Ian's evangelical Christian parents are unhappy with the idea of him being gay, so they send him to one of those places that claim to turn gay people straight. Ian, as usual, takes refuge in the library and eventually ends up running away with Lucy.
The story is a bit predictable: Lucy gets support from her parents and her father’s friends, and, when she noticed a creepy man following her, I was able to guess who sent him. But overall, I liked Lucy, Ian, and Lucy’s father.
The best part of The Borrower came on page 320, when Lucy told the reader, “But books, on the other hand: I do still believe that books can save you.”
