Typically sequels aren't as good as the original, but Catching Fire is just as good as Hunger Games. In addition, the characters are unforgettable; and there is an interesting twist at the end of each chapter that forces you to continue reading.

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. The first time I read this book I gave it four stars. I am writing this after the fact, during read number 3 almost a year later, so I am not quite sure what I thought then.

Right now, I think I like it more than the first book. That could be because I am extremely excited for the movie of this book in the series to come out the end of November, or it could be because I have read the first book so many times (just finished my 7th reading in the last year and a half or so, not to even mention how The first time I read this book I gave it four stars. I am writing this after the fact, during read number 3 almost a year later, so I am not quite sure what I thought then.

Right now, I think I like it more than the first book. That could be because I am extremely excited for the movie of this book in the series to come out the end of November, or it could be because I have read the first book so many times (just finished my 7th reading in the last year and a half or so, not to even mention how many times I have watched and rewatched the first movie) that I am starting to get tired of it.

But anyways... I love Finnick. and I love how Katniss really starts to grow attached to Peeta.

March 2014- They could have done better on the movie...
Watching the movie again in September- I think the reason I don't like this movie as much is because Jennifer Lawrence is less Katniss and more herself. The acting is not perfect. Especially when she has her freak out PTSD moment when she shoots that goose. I really didn't like how she did that.

June 2022:
This update has absolutely nothing to do with a reread of the book or anything like that… but I just saw something online and I was incredibly impressed by the observation and wanted to write it down here so I will remember it since it relates to this book. Wade vs Roe was overturned by the supreme court this past week and people have been losing their minds over the insanity of it. How this could have happened when so many people (myself included) are appalled by the decision is beyond me. Someone posted the following observation on Instagram Reels…

“When Peeta played the Capitol by telling them Katniss was pregnant because he knew they cared more about the unborn child than the teenagers being sent to the Hunger Games”

And someone responded in the comments with this… “Dystopians are never written about the future. They are caricatures of the present”.

Both of those things really hit me. ...more

I like this book much better than The Hunger Games. The writing style still irks me--there are way too many sentence fragments for my taste--but the story line is even more compelling than in the first. I find myself getting more emotionally drawn into the story than I did in the first.

I really enjoyed this book...I think I connected with the charters more (maybe because I knew hem better after the first book. I like the way the Katniss becomes the naive one in this book, not know the plan in the arena. I also think that Suzanne did a great job leaving the ending such a cliff hanger...I am glad the last one is waiting for me in the library as we speak. I can not wait to see what happens and how this story comes to an end.

Such a fantastic second book to The Hunger Games. Started out a bit slow but after Part I, I could not put it down. Love the continuation of the characters and the addition of the new characters. Loved it all!
