I can already see why so many people have fallen in love with this book. The characters are rich and the writing is engaging. Looking forward to finishing it up tonight!

Great books for children should also be good reads for adults and One Crazy Summer totally fits that bill. What a powerful and enjoyable book and a trio of African American sisters visiting their mom in Oakland. I think this book was about an important topic and it was so interesting to read about the Black Panthers, but I didn’t enjoy the actual story all that much. Delphine is awesomely strong but her sisters kind of annoy me and her mother was pretty terrible. Since this is a kids book, the reader kind of expects the mom to be redeemed, which she never really is. I do like the emphasis on poetry and finding your voice. I’m interested enough to read the sequel but I expected more from the book.
