I put off reading this for a very long time because I'd thought that the storyline was stupid. Honestly, the Waves are stupid. But the more I read into it, the more I realized; these aliens are actually pretty smart. They're not what you'd expect extraterrestrial visitors, but that's because the Others have actually been with humanity for God knows how long, and somehow managed to tactically devise a way to wipe out more than half of humanity, all in an attempt to repopulate their species.

I almost didn't read this book b/c I got the name of the author, Rick Yancey, mixed up with Rick Riordan, author of the Percy Jackson series (which I disliked).
When I got that straightened out, I decided to give it a try since my daughter liked it. What I didn't know was that it's a dystopian novel, and I don't read dystopian literature (I had my fill with The Hunger Games and Divergent series and pretty much consider the rest to be derivative). I wish Goodreaads would let you give half stars as I consider The Fifth Wave to be worthy of three and a half stars rather than a solid 3 or four. While The Fifth Wave delivers on action and suspense I did not enjoy the way it was written However, before I get into my review, I need to make something known first.

While The Fifth Wave delivers on action and suspense I did not enjoy the way it was written However, before I get into my review, I need to make something known first.
I am a firm believer that you should always read the book before going to see the movie adaption because the book will give you the full story as well as extra details that the movie leaves out. In the case of The 5th Wave, I actually recommend seeing the movie prior to reading the book. Let me explain. Prior to seeing the movie, I picked up the book and read up a little past chapter 3 to see if it was worth buying. I was very confused The first page talks about a women, her baby and owls. I was not sure how that related to the story. The first chapter talks about aliens. At this point I have no clue who the main character is, the world the is story set in and all the other things usually set up within in the first few chapters. In chapter 2 we finally learn that our heroine's name is Cassie and that her father is for some reason deceased. In chapter 3 Cassie is in the woods and at a gas station looking for supplies
I had a million questions after that such as why is she at a gas station getting food and water? Does she have a normal life ? How did we get from owls to aliens to a dead father all the way to a gas station? It made no sense. To me its like starting The Hunger Games with Katniss in the arena rather than in District 12 If The Hunger Games started out like The 5th Wave did, we would know how Katniss ended up in the arena or anything about her. The way the 5th wave is written makes it very difficult to follow. If I read 3 or 4 chapters of a book and can't follow the path between one event to the next, there is a major problem. I decided to get the book from the Library but I had to wait because there was a super long wait list
The 5th Wave movie does a great job at untangling the messy structure. Up until I saw the movie, I didn't understand the way the book was written. Now, I understand that the book and movie go back and fourth between her past and her present. The movie does a great job at going between past and present. Whereas if your reading the book for the first time without having seen the trailer you wouldn't know how Cassie gets from point A to point B. I like how the movie takes time to tell you everything about Cassie's life prior to the invasion before jumping into the action. Its a lot easier to follow that way. In the book, you're told of Cassie's life prior to the invasion as she's on the run, She mentions her promise to Sam but unless you have seen the movie or that Cassie even has a brother because all the background info is missing. Sammy doesn't get mentioned until chapter 12 if I remember correctly. This book is full of sloppy storytelling and the multiple POV's don't help. My advice? Watch the movie first and then borrow the book I will read the last two because I want to see what happens after the movie ends. ...more
