The first 2/3 of this book were engrossing. There's great historical detail, mystery, magic, romance, humor, vampires, witches, daemons, and some really excellent wine. The last third of the book had some pacing problems that took away from a good story. This is the first book of a planned trilogy. I'll definitely pick up the second one when it comes out.

Even though books about vampires, witches, and demons are familiar in recent years, I think Deborah Harkness has shaped a richly imagined world of creatures in A Discovery of Witches.
