The first 2/3 of this book were engrossing. There's great historical detail, mystery, magic, romance, humor, vampires, witches, daemons, and some really excellent wine. The last third of the book had some pacing problems that took away from a good story. This is the first book of a planned trilogy. I'll definitely pick up the second one when it comes out. ...more

I guess I could call this the "thinking person's Twilight." A young scholar at Oxford, who happens to be a witch, finds a rare volume in the Bodleian Library. She believes it was under a spell, and when she breaks it, otherwordly creatures of all types begin to stalk her. Another professor, who happens to be a vampire, becomes her protector and eventually much more. I did learn some history amidst all of the soap opera drama...and it was actually a fun read. ...more

Good but got a little boring in the middle. I found the main character a little annoying and not what you would expect of an Oxford scholar. Interesting concepts and plot. Will read the second book of the trilogy and see how that goes.

Maybe a 2.5. However, if you want a paranormal romance, you may like it more than I did.
