[close] Right from the beginning Charles Belfoure got me hooked as I felt anxious for the main character and the possible effects his decisions and actions might have on him and throughout the book the author continues to develop a main character with whom the reader can empathize. As the story progresses, the main character, Lucien, grows and changes for the better. In addition to main character, there are several other caring characters who bring out the good in Lucien, even if reluctantly on his part. The author also pits Lucien against characters who are not as nice and do not change in their ways by the end of the book. This contrast among characters and their feelings during the War towards the Jews makes the story even better. Finally, I was especially glad to read the "feel good" ending the author gave this book.
