Engrossing and heartbreaking and of course keenly observed, but the last couple of sections are a lot like Sex and the City: Lagos.

The PBS Great American Read describe this as "a love story across time and space" and while technically true, I feel that if that's what they think, they missed the whole point! This book has so much going on - immigration, race relations, economics, history of Nigeria, etc., etc. I learned so much about Nigeria and about what immigrants go through coming to America that it definitely made me more empathetic to those around me. For that, I am grateful that I read this book.

I love books that give a perspective I never would encounter otherwise. And this one was so well written! The characters were three-dimensional, relatable, flawed, and compelling. Adichie is such a skilled and talented writer. This is the second of her books that I've read and she's the kind of author where I have to make sure I mix in some other authors or I'll plow through her complete works within a year.
