I picked up All The Night We Cannot See because everything about it suggested that I should love it. I love the historical fictions, love historical fiction sets in WWII even more, and love sweeping, time-spanning novels to get swept away in. After reading the first 100 pages or so, I just wasn't feeling it. I was encouraged by positive reviews to hang with it and keep reading. I see that I read this in 2015 but I TOTALLY DON'T REMEMBER IT! Not once in my reading did I have a sense of the familiar. Weird. I need to drink more coconut oil.
I'm upgrading my rating from 3 to 4 stars, but I'm still not ready to give it 5, as so many of my friends and family have done. I felt the story dragged at times. Extraordinary is the only word that comes to mind to describe this book. I have read many books this year--and many good ones at that--and this one is easily the best. The pacing is excellent, the prose is beautiful and the characters were heart-breaking and so real. I was glad to know how it ended, but sad to be finished at the same time.
