In the Unlikely Event is among Judy Blume's best novels and a book I would count among my favorites. I listened to the audiobook edition and the narrator was top notch and she did a stellar job of capturing the personality of each individual character. I really wanted to like this one - because setting the novel against backdrop of the true story of three plane crashes in less than 60 days in Elizabeth, NJ in 1952 was fascinating. But, this had way too many characters, too much superfluous drama, and I feel like a lot got lost in the mix. I had the hardest time keeping Jack and Phil straight and was at least halfway through the book before I figured out who Christina was related to. Characters I wanted to really get to know (like Phil & Steve)

I liked this. It gets 4 stars instead of 5 because there are SO many characters to keep track of, and remember how they are related to each other. It wasn't until near the end that I really got the hang of all of them. I listened to to the audiobook, and I suspect if I had been reading, it may have been tough to hold my attention. The reader is very good, btw!

So first of all, there were just too many characters/POV's to keep track of! I eventually got a handle on them but it took a WHILE.
