Between Shades of Gray is a great book for young adult readers! Lina’s firsthand explanation of what happened to many Lithuanians during Joseph Stalin's reign of terror is a real eye opener. Her insight and personal experience provide young readers with a deeper understanding of a part of history that may otherwise be left untold. The main character, Lina, will capture the heart of many young readers. Her strength, love, and undying will to survive will inspire them. Even through the numerous he

My book club picked this novel as their first read of the school year, and let me tell you, I was not happy. I didn’t want to read this book. I teach about the holocaust, WWII, Stalin, and I really didn’t want to read another book on the topic. Not at the beginning of the school year. This is a heartbreaking historical fiction about horrors faced by the Lithuanian people at the hands of the Soviet guards during Stalin's rule. A little raw for a new mother to read, this book was extremely well written as well worth the read.

There are a few glimmers of light shining through this shocking story - the dignity and generosity of Lina's mother Elena, a handsome boy named Andrius, Lina's drawings, and flashbacks to the family's happy life before Stalin. I would love an illustrated version of this book - Lina describes not only her own work, but also paintings by other artists that inspire her, notably Edvard Munch.

I really enjoyed this story and while I don't usually like the short chapter thing, I think it worked very effectively with this story. I loved the insight the flashbacks have and how they fit in so perfectly with the current story. I enjoyed the insight the book provided on another side of WWII, a part that I was unaware of. I will say that I felt disappointed by the end of the book, I really was hoping for more of Lina's story.
