The Kitchen House is set in antebellum Virginia, and spans approximately a decade and a half to two decades. It’s about Lavinia, an Irish national who was brought to America as an indentured servant at 7 years old and served in the kitchen of a big plantation, and Belle, a slave at the plantation and the captain’s daughter.

I loved this book. I stayed up two late night this weekend reading. I started on Friday night and finished last night, and I completely ignored my school work for it. I had to see what happened. It was hard to read and the separation of children from parents/families during slavery is not pleasant, but the characters were so dynamic and inspiriting in their spirit. I loved it. Except the end- I wanted more.
Otherwise, a perfect book. I recommend it.
