I really enjoyed this book, the imagery was fantastic, and the magic seemed so mysterious yet familiar in a charming way. I thought the love affair between the two main characters was believable and intense. A book full of amazing sets and vivid descriptions.

tel je voor: het mooiste circus van de wereld bezoekt jouw dorp of stad. Ineens is het daar. Helemaal uit het niets. Aan het hek hangt een bordje waarop staat dat het circus alleen 's nachts geopend is. Nieuwsgierig tel je de uren, de minuten en de seconden af. En dan is het zover. De poorten openen zich en je stapt de bijzonderste wereld in die je ooit hebt gezien. Alles is zwart-wit, zelfs het vuur. Enkel de bezoekers brengen kleur met zich mee. Voor je zie je tientallen tenten, als het er nie tel je voor: het mooiste circus van de wereld bezoekt jouw dorp of stad. Ineens is het daar. Helemaal uit het niets. De poorten openen zich en je stapt de bijzonderste wereld in die je ooit hebt gezien. Alles is zwart-wit, zelfs het vuur. Enkel de bezoekers brengen kleur met zich mee. Voor je zie je tientallen tenten, als het er niet honderden zijn. Terwijl je de lucht van gekarameliseerde popcorn inademt, probeer je te besluiten welke tent je het eerst zal bezoeken; wetend dat elke tent iets bijzonders en mysterieus herbergt wat je nooit zult vergeten. Het Cirque des Rêves is namelijk fantastisch, uitzonderlijk en onvergetelijk. Het lijkt wel magie…

Achter de schermen van het Cirque des Rêves gaat een strijd, tussen de twee illusionisten Celia en Marco, schuil. Beiden hebben geen idee wat hun strijd inhoudt, ze weten enkel dat de één de ander moet verslaan in een "spel" dat hun leermeesters hebben bedacht. Ze bezitten allebei magische krachten en zijn hiervoor door hun leermeesters hun hele leven getraind. Het Cirque des Rêves zal het toneel worden van dit gevaarlijke spel. Maar waar hun leermeesters geen rekening mee hebben gehouden, is dat Marco en Celia verliefd op elkaar worden.

Magistraal en betoverend
Het bijzondere aan Het Nachtcircus is dat het hele boek tot leven komt. Erin Morgenstern is er meesterlijk in geslaagd om een omgeving neer te zetten die je kunt aanraken. Je ruikt het vleugje karamel, je proeft de heerlijkste chocolademelk en je ziet alles gebeuren. In hun strijd creëren Celia en Marco de mooiste attracties en tenten vol betoveringen. Een tent vol wolken, een ijstuin die nooit ontdooit en de mogelijkheid dat acrobaten de gevaarlijkste toeren uit kunnen halen zonder ooit te vallen; elke keer weer proberen de twee magiërs elkaar te overtroeven en niets is te gek. Morgenstern weet dit alles zo gedetailleerd en realistisch te beschrijven, dat het bijna tastbaar wordt.

Niet alleen het circus is betoverend, ook de personages in Het Nachtcircus zijn levensecht. Het boek volgt niet alleen Marco en Celia, maar iedereen die met het circus te maken heeft. Een voorbeeld hiervan is Bailey, een boerenjongen die eigenlijk de boerderij van zijn vader over moet nemen, maar wiens lot verstrengeld raakt met dat van het circus. Ook de klokkenmaker, de organisatoren en verschillende personages uit het circus krijgen hun eigen hoofdstukken. Elk karakter is belangrijk voor de loop van het verhaal en Morgenstern zorgt ervoor dat je uitgebreid met hen kennis maakt.

Atmosphere. Atmosphere. Atmosphere. Ms. Morgenstern's book is a writer's study in control and boundaries.

First, her setting is predominantly confined to only a few locales and she readily masters their look, feel and smell. By limiting her venues, she is able to spend time immersing us within their magic. The title circus is wonderfully transcribed from her imagination and becomes as much a character in the novel as the players themselves. Additionally, the house of Chandresh becomes another of Atmosphere. Atmosphere. Atmosphere. Ms. Morgenstern's book is a writer's study in control and boundaries.

First, her setting is predominantly confined to only a few locales and she readily masters their look, feel and smell. By limiting her venues, she is able to spend time immersing us within their magic. The title circus is wonderfully transcribed from her imagination and becomes as much a character in the novel as the players themselves. Additionally, the house of Chandresh becomes another of these magic locales where the unimaginable routinely takes place. Second, Ms. Morgenstern limits the palatte with which she paints. Black and white with an occasional splash of red becomes much more vibrant in her hands than all the hues of the rainbow. As a writer of setting, Ms. Morgenstern does an outstanding job.

As a writer of plot, on the other hand, the author leaves something to be desired. I cannot purge the feeling that I was sold swamp land. The swamp land held some beautiful cypress trees and water lillies, but just try to build upon it and you will find little support.

First, the magical challenge that acts as the focal point for tension never really materializes. The rules of the engagement are so vague that we never feel a sense competition. The "moves" the players make are never judged or quantified, so we never know where this amorphous contest stands. Who is winning? Who is losing? What are the consequences of winning or losing?

The two forms of magic used have no yardstick by which they can be measured against one another. Has Celia's latest creation shown power and precision versus Marco's latest endeavour? Is she weak? Strong? Too emotional? Too chaotic? Is Marco too meticulous or labor intensive? Will the enchantments he weaves fall apart when pushed? Will one player push against the other's creations? None of this goldmine of plot is ever explored by Ms. Morgenstern. Instead, the plot leads us down the road of why this contest was ever contrived to begin with. Unfortunately, the answer to that question falls flat and we are left with an emptiness once the sugar high of the vision of The Night Circus wears off. ...more

Absolutely wonderful. Totally different to anything I've read before. It took me some time to work out if that was a good thing or bad, it is a good thing. Most definitely good. I rushed through the second half of the book utterly entranced by the circus within. beautifully written. ...more

This was a NaNoWriMo novel, and it sure reads like it. Flat characterization, creaky plotting, racist stereotypes, this book has it all. A short story’s worth of plot padded out to reach the 50k mark (three times over, apparently). Just like a real circus, the thin veneer of magic hides a grimy interior.
