Atmosphere. Atmosphere. Atmosphere. Ms. Morgenstern's book is a writer's study in control and boundaries.
First, her setting is predominantly confined to only a few locales and she readily masters their look, feel and smell. Absolutely wonderful. Totally different to anything I've read before. It took me some time to work out if that was a good thing or bad, it is a good thing. Most definitely good. I rushed through the second half of the book utterly entranced by the circus within. beautifully written.

This was a NaNoWriMo novel, and it sure reads like it. Flat characterization, creaky plotting, racist stereotypes, this book has it all. A short story’s worth of plot padded out to reach the 50k mark (three times over, apparently). Just like a real circus, the thin veneer of magic hides a grimy interior.

The best word I can describe this with is "beautiful". Told extremely well, this book is a delight to read and the words float by without any stuttering. I can't recommend it enough, it's pretty magical.
