A week later and I still don't know what to make of this review. I enjoyed it, but found it hard to read too much of in one sitting. Yet when I put it down, I wanted more. And when I got more, I felt like I had enough and put it down...and the cycle continued.

This is a very slow, character-driven story that teases an interesting world without ever really going too far beyond the main characters. As such, it's the characters that make or break this, and for me it was a mixed bag. I loved Amat - ...more

Shelves: fantasy

I picked up A Shadow in Summer because I had read many praiseworthy reviews of it, and knew it was a story set outside the typical Medieval European setting used in Fantasy.

For the first twenty pages or so, I was overwhelmed by the amount of information poured on the reader; entirely alien terms, many different names, and no great deal of exposition, throwing us into the midst of a story without much context.
