4.5 stars. My husband and I like to have discussions about books sometimes, and since I just started reading this the other night, we talked about John Scalzi and his works. Apparently, on the one hand my husband likes his books, but at the same time thinks they "wrap up too nicely" for his tastes. That is, he thinks they are without real trials and tribulations, and that they always seem to end with perfect outcomes, tied up neatly in a pretty little bow.

The review is for Audiobook format.
I’ll divide my review into two parts, and just rate it, it would probably express my opinion better. So there it goes:
1) 0-70% :
Writing: 3.5-3.75/5. Solid writing.
Characterization: 2/5. Very poor. I really didn't care for any of the characters, they were flat and boring.
Plot: 2.5/5. Not that interesting.
Author’s storytelling craft: 2/5. Oh boy, that was bad…..
Sci-fi ideas: 3.5/5. A good author could have done a much better job with these ideas.

This book is one of the best I have EVER read. I could not put it down, and I laughed so hard at points that people looked at me rather strangely (I recommend not reading it in places such as say, the library). Definitely science fiction with a heart -- engaging characters, a philosophical thread that doesn't try to beat you with a hammer, and a scientific angle that was not overly technical but seemed entirely plausible. Also, bonus points for not having sound or heat in open space.

I love the stuff I've read from Scalzi so far. This one was no exception. I don't usually like military sci-fi. I find the genre to be colonialist and hyper-masculine and, well, militaristic. This book is sort of anti-all those things while dressed as a space marines type of tale. There are some thoughtful considerations throughout this book of all the questions that usually go unasked by others just like this: is there ever a chance for peace? What does it mean to colonize? Who is expendable an

I heard about Old Man’s War from a podcast and came in a little skeptical. I was pleasantly surprised. John Perry was a great main character. His inner monolog was funny and made it so I could connect with him and appreciate his adventures. The story world for Old Man’s War was also fun to get into. All of the alien cultures were well thought out and consistent. I haven’t read a lot of sci-fi over the last few years, but this book got me back into it. If you are looking for a book with a lot of
