What Members Thought

I read the Mistborn trilogy a long time ago, even before I joined Goodreads. That's why I thought I should write a review that sums up my thoughts of The Final Empire, even if it was about 7 years ago.
This book totally blew me away when I read it. It's a superb mix between epic fantasy and Ocean's 11. I really like how he always tries to push the boundaries and explore the genre. In this case - what if the dark lord won and took over the world ?

Second time around, I definitely like this book better, especially now that I've had more fantasy novels under my belt and can appreciate the genre more.
It is a mistake, however, tackling this series again after having read The Way of Kings, which rekindled my interest in Sanderson in the first place. It's obvious his writing has come a long way, and while he is a fantastic world builder and an amazing creator of magic systems as always, Mistborn now feels less polished to me, and its characters ...more

I really don't get the hype over Brandon Sanderson.

The good:
- Magic system: Well thought through and executed, very physics-based/scientific, creative
- Mystery: The skaa have been kept in the dark for so long that they are rediscovering their world as we are discovering it
- Bad guys: The Lord Ruler is a twisted, thinks-he's-helping-the-world kinda bad, and he surrounds himself with mutilated henchmen (who, it's hinted, gain much of their powers from said mutilation)
- Plotline: All the chaos and difficulty of inciting a political rebellion agains ...more

This is an incredible world to imagine and partake in. The dark red sun and the ash and soot covering the streets. The people didn't even know that the sun should be yellow and that plants should be green. The realistic science of Allomancy was fascinating. Pushing and pulling on metals around, and soothing or rioting people's emotions. It intrigued me to find out what would happen in a world with no hope, no morals, that was completely fallen. How could a world like that possibly change and get

When I started reading this book I was prepared to be bored. The beginning was boring, but after a few chapters the action started picking up. There was still moments where it seemed that Sanderson wrote this book only to show off his amazing magic system, but the action and story made up for it. If you read slowly I can see this book boring you, but please try to stick through it.

Very well written, imaginative world and magic system. I loved that it started out with the bad guy in charge. Kelsier was my favourite character, Vin was a bit too paranoid for me, but that didn't affect my overall enjoyment of the book.

I quite enjoyed the book. My most recent favorite series was the Terry Goodkind "Sword of Truth" series. I now am now reading both this trilogy as well as the Goodkind series. I really enjoyed the way Sanderson developed the characters.
