What Members Thought

Surprisingly un-Victorian feel to the language (though the atmosphere is decidedly French), but hard to know whether that is original or due to the translation. Vividly describes the anguish of conflicting pulls of heart versus convention and the consequent highs and lows - emotionally and socially. Not at all explicit, and a very harshly moral tale, but caused a scandal when published, presumably because the driving force is a woman's desires rather than a man's.

I must say it was excellent. Quite the page turner. I enjoyed Emma's character even when I know I probably shouldn't. But I could relate to her at times. Charles was a fool, who I didn't pity or feel sorry for. At first yes I did, and first I liked his character but, I guess you'll just have to read it for yourselves to understand why I feel the way I do towards him.

I have to say, I found this book terribly difficult to get through. I despised Emma and really didnt think highly of any of the characters. It didnt even hold my interest at all until the world came tumbling down on her. Hope I enjoy the next classic I read much more. But I am told Flaubert has much more interesting work to explore. It is such a sad romantic tale.
Emma (Madame Bovary), marries a doctor but yearns for romance and things above her means. She has affairs and gets herself and her husband into terrible debt and about to become destitute.

I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd have liked, but I think it's a great novel. I'll give it four stars only because I didn't enjoy it very much , although I'm sure that is my fault.
