“His heart beat faster and faster as Daisy’s white face came up to his own. He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, his mind would never romp again like the mind of God. So he waited, listening for a moment longer to the tuning fork that had been struck upon a star. Then he kissed her."

On an entertainment level this book would probably be about a three for me BUT all of the elements that make it great deserve one extra star. Espec

I can't believe I never read this in High School or any other time. I was blown away by the pathos of Gatsby and the unfeeling behavior of Daisy and her husband. While the book was easy to read, it wasn't cursory description of the times Fitzgerald lived and partied in. He accurately portrayed the high society of which he was a part. The behaviors and attitudes in his time are much the same as today's. ...more

Wow. I don't know what to say, except that I loved it. Now I just want to run to the library and pick up all of his other works, which wouldn't work considering I'm at the high school all week for musical and need to reading Whitman.

Weirdly, I though that his prose sounded very similar to John Green's. Or, John Green's sound like Fitzgerald's. I just became so engrossed in this novel, which we don't actually need to finish until next week.

I've actually read this book three times and I never really bring out much of the story when I read it.
Its the circumstances of the story that are so great.
I always leave the book feeling bad for Gatsby. He has everything and yet he has nothing that he cares about. He goes through life wanting something he most likely can never have instead of giving up and moving on. I admire the devotion but in the end...you'll just have to read it.

The writing style is beautiful. My problem is that I didn't like any of the characters. I just didn't care. The story is supposed to represent the downfall of the illusions of the American Dream. Nobody cared beyond the superficial (except Nick maybe but he was too passive) and their lives were empty. I just wish it was a bit more hopeful. I'll read it again when I'm older. ...more

I'm not a big fan of this book. I think it's a glorified soap-opera, I have difficulty seeing it in any other light. I'm sorry, I just can't get past how blown up the plot is.
