Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark moustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.
I initially did not like this book at all and thought it was boring and irritating. I did enjoy it more about half way through in the way that the story explored the world and what did/did not would/would not happen and why. While I wouldn't say that I loved this book, or even that I liked it, I enjoyed it a lot more than I initially thought that I would and got more out it than I expected. 1984 is one scary look into a Totalitarian future. There were some great messages that really make you think. What do we really know other than what we have read in books and what others tell us?
I love this book at first, but then it lost me. I think too many people have been "inspired" by this book so Orwell's once original ideas just seemed tired and boring.
