To Kill a Mockingbird—written during the peak of the civil rights movement, when hatred and fear penetrated the hearts of those who feared change and what that change meant (equality among the races, leading to the loss of white’s current position of “superiority”) often leading to riots and violent attacks—came at a much needed moment in American history and is well deserving of the Pulitzer prize awarded to it.

I originally started reading this book because it was a classic that it seemed like everyone in the world had read and recommended (at least on Goodreads). I actually wasn't that turned on by it when I started reading thinking that it would just be another book about racism. I was converted. I really ended up loving this book and its story. ...more
