I usually love reading Graham Greene's books, but this one was problematic for me. First, I did not care for the narrator, who was fill with hate and maliciousness. The narrator has an affair with the wife of an acquaintance. He is filled with rage when his lover decides to stop the affair. She does so because she is questioning if there is a God. In a rather far-fetched scenario, she decides there is a god and turns to Catholicism without opening a Bible and getting the answers from there. In a ...more

Graham Greene was a master at creating characters that take you on a journey to and sometimes away from God. In this novel, the central character reminded me a lot of the protagonist in The Quiet American. Dispassionate, empty men forever trying to fill the void. Of all his novels, this one seemed to be closer to home than others. It didn't too much of stretch to realise that Maurice Bendrix was Graham Greene, brooding troubled men with so much angst in them. I would give this five stars if I didn't think it should have ended sooner. Greene is marvelous at capturing human feelings, insecurities, and frailties. Really, really excellent. I suppose I'd give it 4.5 stars. ...more
