What Members Thought

Although I was often annoyed with one character or another, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. George Sand was a superb "people watcher" and shows keen intelligence in her observations of human frailties and perspectives. I'm so glad I finally read this, and I can see why Virginia Woolf praised it as "the first novel written for grownups." It's a study of small-town living in all its complexity but is at its best when making observations about human behavior.
