Wow.
I am unsure how I made it this long without having read "The Bell Jar".
I LOVED it despite this being an incredible and harrowing depiction of depression in an age where mental health was not understood.

I struggle in the first few chapters. The lives of the girls in New York seemed shallow and insipid. However, the writing changed as the narrator went deeper and deeper into her mental illness and became suicidal. Her experience with shock treatment mirrored the author's experience and was truly horrifying. I wish there was more information as to why she rejected her mother's love and care.
