December 2012- first reading.May 2015-listening to audio in preparation of finishing the series. I have yet to read the Harry Potter series but from what I have heard it starts out fun and magical and gets darker as the series progresses. This series seems to barely graze the fun and magical before it gets menacing and dark…and I loved it as much listening to it this time as I did when I read it in 2012.

A good story, sort of like Harry Potter with more sex and bad language. I suppose it is intended to portray the actual behavior of teens and young adults. I would have been happier with a bit less cursing, but that's just me.

I liked this book overall. The stuff at school, post graduation - decent. The last "book" of the book left me kind of underwhelmed and unsatisfied. ...more

Beautiful prose, but the lack of growth of the main character was depressing (as he was depressed). And I lost a lot of trust int he author over some details that didn't make sense geographically partway through the book - if he was so wrong about something I know, how can I trust that I wasn't (purposely or accidentaly) mislead elsewhere?

I liked the premise and promise more than the execution and resolution. This is a good choice if you're a Harry Potter and/or (emphasis on the and) Narnia fan and are feeling a bit cynical.
