I am completely ambivalent about "The Lies of Locke Lamora" by Scott Lynch. On the one hand, I liked the characters and really got caught up in their adventure. On the other hand, I hated how Lynch told us several times about a character who never once makes an appearance. I hated how he just dropped the storyline of Locke and the Gentleman Bastard's youth without completing it. I like how he wrapped up the main storyline and gave it a sense of finality, but left it open for more adventures. I l ...more

It's hard to believe this is a debut novel - the plot is intricate and tight, the pacing is taut, the characters and the world they inhabit richly drawn. The book tells the story of the rise and fall of Locke Lamora and the Gentleman Bastards - the City of Camorr's most accomplished and creative thieves and con artists. Its the first in a series but this book wraps up well and does not leave any huge loose ends.

And did I mention it's hilarious? It is but it is also at times quite dark. It's a fu

I was genuinely fascinated by this book only by reading a few first pages. Very recommended. I read the last third of the book during the early morning on Sunday, I could not put it down even to have breakfast.

It is a crime story set in a fantasy world, but the protagonists are the thieves. Always love reading about (can we say) successful, smart, witty, charming thieves, with a certain morale standard. Every one member of the Gentleman Bastards (and the con man who invented them) are totally li

2nd time through: I felt pretty much the same as the first time I read it. There was a lot of extra world building, to the point that it felt distracting. I didn't have a problem with the timeline this time, though. I'm not sure why I had a hard time with it the first time I read, either. It's not that bad.

1st time reading:
I'm quite late to the party in reading this one, as it was published years ago, but it's been on my to-read list for so long that I finally put it on my list for the "Books to

This story revolves around a group of thieves known as the Gentleman Bastards, which I have to admit, is a fairly cool name for a group of thieves.

I feel as though I wanted to enjoy it more than I did. I can't really put my finger on the reason I wasn't entirely rapt with it. There were some interesting characters, but I guess at times it felt a little too focused on one small group of people. There were hints of other interesting characters, I would have liked it if Lynch had explored Locke an

I enjoyed the twisty nature of the plot in the book as both you and Locke tried to figure out what was going on. The world was also interesting, with interesting comments on its religions, history, traditions and social structure. The plot moved along nicely, keeping you involved and interested. Some parts were a bit dark for my taste, though.

Very good start to a promising series. Snappily plotted. Great characters and hard to predict.

Really enjoyed this mysery/con-man book. Got a little "loose" at the end... I was wishing he had one more con to work. ...more

I really enjoyed this book. The plot is kind of a cross between Robin Hood and The Count of Monte Cristo set in a fictional world and city. It is a wonderfully realized world and a page turning story. I even liked the structure of the book as well: There are frequent "interludes" that gradually reveal back story, and each particular bit of back of story is usually very relevant to the following chapters. This is definitely a read that I think most people would enjoy. ...more

I really wanted to mark this 4.5 stars. I would have given it 5 stars but it feels about 100 or 150 pages too long. Although, I can honestly say I don't know what I would remove.

I loved it. Once I got to the last 100 pages, I absolutely could not put it down. The world building is excellent and the characters are fantastic.

I think it was even better the second time.

World Fantasy award nominated beginning of a new series. A bit slow in the beginning, but picks up pace after a hundred page or so and then doesn't let go until the very end. Witty and funny, interspersed by some startling sequences of violence. Not as dark as some of the recent grimdark offerings, but dark enough. ...more
