Loved it. I'll admit it took me awhile to get familiar with the world. Moreso than usual with fantasy novels, which always take some getting used to. And it took awhile to make clear that this was not a spires and wizards tale a la T.H. White. In fact that's one of the things that endeared me to it in the end. Without going dark, it played as a believable telling of ruffians in an ancient world of magic. I love Joe Abercrombie and Patrick Rothfuss, and because of them I don't need another dark g ...more

The most entertaining debut novel I've read since Max Brooks's World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, and every bit as enviably crafted. It’s offensive that someone start his career this good, and worse than Brooks, since Lynch has already written another Gentlemen Bastard novel, intends at least five more, and shows every sign of continuing producing amazing novels afterward. This one *slowly* won me over. I really enjoyed the brash intro, but then the tale of the title character's carefully plotted long-cons in an alternate late medieval world (with a few magical trappings) seemed stuck in an amusing-but-not-engaging mode. I almost put it down.

I usually use a '50 page' rule when starting new books. If they don't grab me and make me want to continue reading after 50 pages, I put the book down. TBH, Lies of Locke Lamora failed that test the first time I picked it up. But a couple of friends whose opinions I trust insisted it was an amazing book. So I bought the audiobook version when Audible had a sale, figuring I'd give it a go on the commute.

I finished it while driving to Oregon for the total eclipse. I was wrong. This book is amazin

I read this book very close to publication, thanks to connections at Random House. Reading it for the first time was a revelation. The plotting is amazingly sophisticated, the writing immaculate, and the whole story contains an infectious sense of fun that lingers years after reading.
