Despite the slow start this turned out to be a damn good read. It's a Norse-inspired fantasy with a world that's incredibly dangerous and with people to match. I love the ideas at play in this one; god touched bloodlines, the subtlety and complexity of rune magic, the incredibly strange and terrifying creatures that inhabit the world.
I'm excited to see where book two is heading, especially after that ending.

How do you feel about diacritical marks? This will determine a great deal of whether you'll enjoy this book. A couple examples:

"'Isbrú, opinberaðu þig, blóð guðanna skipar þér,' Uspa chanted. Her blood gathered in cracks in the rock, trickling down to the ground."

"'Hlýða og fá verðlaun,' he grated in the Galdur-tongue."

Pro-tip: reading this on Kindle is a great experience because you can easily look up all the Norse weaponry and armor, as well as translate much of the Galdur-tongue, which is act

So many people love this book but it was just to slow for me. Could see the storylines will eventually connect but I needed it to happen sooner.
