This is a hard book to review. The first half is a kaleidoscope of grief and loss, a difficult read in the best of times and a gut-wrenching read right now. Some of the stories are funny, some are meditative, some are bleak—many are all of these and more. Together they weave a haunting tapestry of life at the end of life.

The tone of the back half is less dismal, though aside from the standout “A Gallery a Century, a Cry a Millenium,” the earlier stories are much stronger. There’s an aimlessness

A collection of stories spanning centuries, linked by a mysterious viral plague that sweeps across the globe, claiming lives and forever altering others. On the heels of our own pandemic, it can make for a very sobering read at times, yet moments of despair are counter-balanced by instances of humor, heart, and hope.
