The beginning of this book feels like a bunch of short stories that got smooshed all together and just happened to have a common main character in them. The adventures that take place are so random and disconnected, it was a bit distracting to read. You jump from space battles to cannibals to deadly poker games and on and on. It was mostly interesting for much of the ride -- interesting worldbuilding and characters, except that I think I was supposed to be rooting for Horta and he kinda was awful? But he went to interesting places.
The ending fell really flat for me -- it was supposed to be suspenseful but I found it really dull and hard to power through. By the time I got to the end I had no appetite for reading the appendixes.

This book didn’t really do it for me. I liked the world building but found the story too slow to develop.
