Whether you read SF or not, Ray Bradbury writes beautifully. His style is dreamy and lyrical, satirical and funny, and at times creepy as hell.
This book is interconnected short stories, rather than a novel in the traditional sense. It describes the imagined human colonization of Mars. I already had The Martian Chronicles on my GoodReads shelf with a four star rating. That was nostalgia. I read all of Bradbury's work when I was in junior high and loved it all with a love that only a 13 year-old can muster. Fast forward nearly forty years and I got a copy of the audiobook for $4.95 through one of Audible's sales. It turns out that I'd forgotten nearly the entire book. I read it after hearing the news of Bradbury's death and realised again what a great writer has passed away. While it can be considered a science fiction and fantasy hybrid, it address so many human issues, starting from religion, racism, loneliness etc. that it becomes a sociological piece. While the science is quaintly outdated, the universal appeal is still there, and will remain so, as a mark of a true classic. ...more
