I loved this but wow, I cannot read a book or see a movie about space without reaffirming how I never, ever, ever want to be an astronaut or go to space. Ever. I will just die on this planet, thanks.

Climate change and the space race are accelerated into the 1950s due to a meteor strike. The soul-crushing devastation is referred to in the early chapters, but most of it concerns the women who are eager to travel to space--because it is their passion to go further and faster. Fighting against the old boys network, and against the racial discrimination rampant at that time.

I loved this book and could not put it down. An alternate history where the space program of the 50s and 60s was accelerated and woman pilots strove to be astronauts.

It's okay. I like Kowal's voice. She does a good pastiche of golden age, space-race science fiction style that folds in her revisionist approach fairly seamlessly. I appreciate the project, but it all seems a bit skeletal. I feel like she had the end goal too much in mind to bother with the business of characterization or development. ...more

3.5. I loved the premise initially but for some reason couldn't click with the book because in the end, alternative history just really isn't for me, I'll admit. ...more

A good story, if a bit preachy at times. Not sure how true-to-life it is, but good food for thought in any case.
