I enjoyed this first book in a series about a "lady astronaut" in an alternate 1950s after a giant asteroid has hit earth. The author does a great job performing her novel, so the audio is highly recommended. Serious trigger warning for graphic depictions of anxiety, and non-serious trigger warning for somewhat hokey geek sex that can only happen between two highly intelligent marrieds who have been together a long time.

I really enjoyed this book. It really wasn’t a great book. But I liked it anyway, and here’s why.

She also clearly cares about her themes and was committed to thinking thing through. This is an excellent example of solid workmanlike SF that we don’t get as much as we used to. I’m inclined to ...more

It's okay. I like Kowal's voice. She does a good pastiche of golden age, space-race science fiction style that folds in her revisionist approach fairly seamlessly. I appreciate the project, but it all seems a bit skeletal. I feel like she had the end goal too much in mind to bother with the business of characterization or development.

I enjoyed it. Definitely one of those slower reads there's not "OMG" climax moment or anything like that, but it's an engaging read nonetheless.
