The first portion of this book is simply one of the best slices of fantasy I've ever read -- interesting characters, richly detailed alternate world that's nevertheless introduced in a brisk and easily digested way, a well-paced narrative that quickly sucks you. Also, I came in expecting more or less pure fantasy, and was very impressed to experience an ambitious mix of alternate history, fantasy and science fiction -- a mix that easily have been become a mess, but which Pullman handles deftly.
